Nick Major, ForFarmers Corporate Affairs Director in his role as President of FEFAC, contributed to a stakeholder meeting in Brussels last week on protecting forests. This is a high priority under the Finnish Presidency of the European Council (who organised the meeting) and the incoming European Commission.
Nick explained the work the feed industry had been doing on responsible sourcing of feed materials since 2006 and in particular with the publication of the FEFAC soy sourcing guidelines in 2015.
He also took the opportunity to set the record straight on media reports trying to suggest that demand for soy by the European feed industry was one of the causes of the recent fires and deforestation in the Amazon. In fact there is a Soy Moratorium in place in Brazil which means that no soy grown on land in the Amazon region deforested after 2008 can enter the European supply chain.
